You’re considering a major home remodel or even home additions in Edmonton, but have you thought about how long your home will be under construction? Being prepared and understanding the process of these major home improvements can help you prepare for and even minimize disruptions to your home life.

Here are some timeframe estimates based on homeowners surveyed by HomeAdvisor for major renovation and home addition projects:

Kitchen renovations:

If you are completely remodeling a kitchen, including changing the layout and replacing all the features, expect to wait up between 6 weeks to 3 months for the project to be complete. Minor kitchen renovations that don’t include replacing or moving plumbing, electrical or other mechanical systems can take up to 3 weeks to complete.

Bathroom renovations:

The time required to complete a bathroom renovation depends on the scope and size of the renovation. Putting in a bathroom addition will take a lot more time than simply updating a bathroom that is already in your house. For a bathroom addition, it could take 4-5 weeks to complete. For a minor bathroom upgrade, the job can be done in a week or less.

Home additions:

house addition is when you add to the original footprint of your home or create new space within your home like putting a bathroom in the basement or master bedroom. Set aside 3 to 4 months for construction of a major home addition and don’t forget to add another month or so for the pre-construction design and planning. Home additions are extensive projects that take a lot of time. Be prepared for that!

Basement finishing or renovations:

If you are finishing your basement or giving it a complete remodel to change the current layout of the space, expect it to take 7 weeks or more. If you plan on moving or adding plumbing or electrical work, you can add some time to the construction phase. Freshening up an already finished basement with new flooring, paint and trim will take less time.
