Faster Approvals, Bigger Opportunities: What the Federal Major Projects Office Means for Edmonton

The Edmonton Chamber of Commerce is excited about the announcement of the first projects advanced under Canada’s flagship Major Projects Office (MPO). By streamlining approvals and reducing red tape, the MPO will create opportunities for Edmonton businesses and strengthen Canada’s competitiveness, while ensuring that decisions made in Ottawa deliver tangible benefits for Alberta’s economy.
“Streamlining approvals is exactly the kind of action we’ve called for,” said Doug Griffiths, President & CEO of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. “When projects can move faster, businesses in Edmonton benefit, from construction firms to logistics providers to innovators in clean energy and advanced manufacturing.”
The first five projects named by the MPO represent more than $60 billion in investment across energy, infrastructure, and critical minerals. While these projects are located outside Alberta, their supply chains and impacts will be felt here in Edmonton through expanded trade capacity, supply chain activity, and new opportunities for local firms to scale and export globally.
“These major projects are economic engines,” said Heather Thomson, Vice-President of Economy & Engagement. “They create jobs, attract capital, and strengthen the foundations of our economy. For Edmonton, faster approvals mean more opportunities for local businesses to scale, more investment flowing into our region, and a stronger role in building Canada’s long-term competitiveness.”
We are looking forward to the announcement of further nation-building infrastructure, such as the early-stage Pathways Plus project, a pipeline to the B.C. coast, along with reforms to laws that discourage investment. Together, these actions will unlock Canada’s full economic potential and ensure Alberta’s strengths contribute fully to a stronger, more resilient national economy.
This announcement also reflects the priorities outlined in the Edmonton Chamber’s Federal Action Plan 2025, building an investable economy, expanding Canadian trade capacity, improving productivity, and delivering critical infrastructure. You can view the entire Action Plan here.
