Edmonton Chamber of Commerce Applauds Government of Alberta’s Leadership on Return-to-Office Mandate
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 24, 2025
Edmonton,AB –The Edmonton Chamber of Commerce commends the Government of Alberta for its decision to require all public service employees to return to the office full time, effective February 1, 2026. This decisive move demonstrates leadership and a strong commitment to revitalizing Alberta’s downtowns and restoring vibrancy to our urban centres.
This announcement reinforces the recommendations outlined in the Edmonton Chamber’s Municipal Action Plan, which warned that Edmonton risks “falling behind” other jurisdictions that have already advanced return-to-office policies. It also supports the priorities set out in the Chamber’s Federal Action Plan, which calls for building an investable economy and enhancing Canadian productivity.
“This is the kind of leadership Alberta needs,” said Doug Griffiths, President and CEO of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. “Getting people back into offices will help rebuild the energy of our downtown, support small businesses, and foster stronger collaboration across the public sector. We want all orders of government to follow this example and take action to strengthen our communities and local economies.”
Remote work policies were necessary during the COVID-19 pandemic, but their long-term continuation has had significant unintended consequences. Empty offices have led to decreased foot traffic, reduced customer volumes for downtown businesses, and diminished economic activity. The Edmonton Chamber has consistently advocated for a balanced, responsible return to in-person work to strengthen Edmonton’s economy and civic life.
The Edmonton Chamber urges both the City of Edmonton and the Government of Canada to follow the Government of Alberta’s example by taking decisive steps to bring public employees with office-based roles back to their workplaces five days per week. A consistent in-office presence is critical to boosting productivity, fostering collaboration, and ensuring the long-term vitality of downtown businesses and communities.
