Heightened Restrictions Are Disappointing But Necessary

07 April 2021

Following weeks of rising case counts, the Government of Alberta announced increased restrictions as the province moves back to step 1 of the reopening plan.

“With the variant case numbers skyrocketing, we have very little choice but to increase restrictions.” said Janet M. Riopel, President and CEO of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, “These restrictions will continue to have devastating impacts on businesses, who are once again faced with surplus inventories, sending their staff home, and trying to find new ways to withstand this never-ending storm.”

Premier Kenney also announced that more supports will be made available to struggling businesses.

“Governments must keep their foot on the gas pedal – supports must be maintained and enhanced until we are well on our way towards economic recovery.” said Riopel, “We are eagerly awaiting news of what new support programs will be made available, ensuring businesses can hang on just a little bit longer and ride out this third wave.”

“With our case numbers rising rapidly, we must all remain vigilant.” said Riopel, “Jobs are key to our economic recovery. We must bring down the number of hospitalizations so businesses can relaunch, and Albertans can get back to work.”
