Edmonton Chamber of Commerce Welcomes Albertans’ Decision to Remain in Canada, Calls for Renewed Focus on Economic Growth

Statements and Press Releases

October 20, 2026 – Albertans have made their voices heard. With preliminary referendum results showing overwhelming support for remaining in Canada, the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce welcomes the clarity this decision brings to Alberta’s economic future.

For businesses, investors and communities across our province, this is an important moment of certainty. After months of uncertainty surrounding Alberta’s future within Canada, the results send a clear message to businesses and investors at home and abroad: Alberta remains a place to invest, grow and build for the future.

The uncertainty surrounding the referendum has weighed on business confidence and investment decisions. We don’t need to separate to feel the effects of separation. And Alberta already has. Businesses have delayed expansion plans, investors have taken a wait-and-see approach, and some opportunities have gone elsewhere while our future was in question. With Albertans now having expressed a clear preference to remain in Canada, we have an opportunity to restore that confidence, attract new investment and refocus our collective efforts on economic growth and prosperity.

While the results provide important clarity, there is still work to be done. The Edmonton Chamber encourages all orders of government, particularly the Government of Alberta, to use this moment to strengthen economic stability, improve competitiveness and address the challenges facing businesses.

The Edmonton Chamber will continue to advocate strongly on behalf of our members and the broader business community, ensuring that the interests of businesses remain central to decisions about Alberta’s economic future.

Albertans have made their choice. Now is the time to turn that certainty into opportunity, investment and lasting prosperity for our province.
