Across every sector and size, Edmonton businesses agree that the city’s infrastructure is underperforming. From deteriorating roads and slow transit upgrades to limited digital connections and challenges in building new housing, these gaps are directly affecting day-to-day operations and long-term growth.
In our May 2025 Policy Pulse survey, local businesses shared their views on public infrastructure. The results reveal both challenges and opportunities:

Infrastructure is underperforming. Nearly 80% of businesses rated Edmonton’s infrastructure as only “fair” or “poor.”

It’s essential to success. 72% said infrastructure is “very” or “extremely” important to their operations.

Top priority: roads and transit. 52% identified road maintenance and transit upgrades as most urgent.

Low priority: active transit. 59% feel bike lanes and active transport are expensive and underused.

Planning and communication gaps. 79% said infrastructure planning issues directly affected them last year.
Businesses also offered clear recommendations for governments at all levels:
