2026 City Councillor Budget Engagement Series Takeaways
Over recent months, the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce has convened members of the business community to meet with city councillors in our City Budget Engagement Roundtable Series. These sessions covered business needs in the upcoming city budget, feedback on the Economic Action Plan, and insights on what to expect in coming months from City Council.
These discussions also helped inform our Fiscal Taskforce in the development of Back on Track: Edmonton Chamber’s Business Budget, set to release in September.
Build a City Edmontonians Can Be Proud Of
A strong sense of pride in Edmonton was identified as a foundational element of economic growth and community wellbeing. Well-kept roads, attractive streetscapes, and properly maintained parks contribute to how both residents and visitors perceive the city. Arts, culture, and community events were also highlighted as essential contributors to Edmonton's identity and vibrancy. Participants noted that a thriving cultural scene helps attract talent, supports tourism, increases foot traffic in commercial areas, and creates the kind of energy that encourages people to spend time and invest in the city. Creating a vibrant and welcoming environment was seen not only as a quality-of-life issue but also as a key economic development strategy.
Building a Business-Friendly Environment
Business leaders consistently stressed the importance of creating an environment where companies can grow, invest, and succeed. Red tape reduction remained one of the most frequently discussed priorities, with participants calling for more efficient permitting processes, faster approvals, and less administrative burden on businesses. Participants expressed support for targeted incentives and policies that encourage businesses to choose Edmonton over competing jurisdictions The overall message was clear: the City should focus on removing barriers, supporting investment, and creating conditions that allow businesses to thrive.

Safety emerged as one of the most important considerations influencing Edmonton's economic future. Participants noted that both actual safety concerns and public perceptions of safety affect investment decisions, consumer behaviour, downtown activity, and overall confidence in the city. Participants generally view public safety and social support as interconnected challenges that require collaborative approaches. Creating a safer city was seen not only as a public policy objective but as a critical component of attracting investment, increasing vibrancy, and ensuring Edmonton remains a welcoming place for residents, workers, and visitors.
